 Quick Rules and Exercises.

 

  • Unless = “if not”

👉 Use present simple (like first conditional)

Example:
Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus.

 

  • As long as / Provided that / On condition that

👉 Means: “only if”
👉 Use present simple for future meaning

Example:
You can go out as long as you finish your homework.

 

 

  • Even if

👉 Use like normal conditionals (adds contrast)

Examples:
Even if it rains, I will go. (real)
Even if I won the lottery, I wouldn’t quit my job. (unreal)

 

  •  In case

👉 Use present simple (NOT “will”)
👉 Meaning: precaution

Example:
Take an umbrella in case it rains.

 

 

  •  When

👉 Use present simple for facts or future certainty

Example:
When you heat ice, it melts.

 

  •  Suppose / Imagine

👉 Use past simple + would (second conditional)

Example:
Suppose you won the lottery, what would you do?

 Step 1: Look at the second part (main clause)
Step 2: Decide the type of conditional
 Step 3: Match the tense in the first part

 

Example:

  • “would” → use past simple
  • “will” → use present simple
  • “would have” → use past perfect
