Exercises  1   2    3

Adverbs Of Frequency (Always, Usually, Often)

Elementary Exercise 4

Tips before you start this exercise:

Position of Adverbs of Frequency

The position of the adverb depends on the verb type:

1. Before main verbs (but NOT the verb “be”)

Subject + adverb + main verb

Example:

• She usually drinks tea.

• They often go to school by bus.

2. After “be” verbs (am, is, are, was, were)

Subject + be verb + adverb

Example:

• I am never hungry after a big meal.

• He is always late.

3. Between auxiliary verbs and main verbs (when there are two verbs)

Subject + auxiliary verb + adverb + main verb

Example:

• She has already finished her work.

• They are usually watching TV in the evening.

• He does often forget his keys.

(Auxiliary verbs: do, does, did, have, has, had, will, can, am/is/are when used in continuous or passive)

Summary (easy to remember)

  • One main verb → adverb before it
  • “Be” verb → adverb after it
  • Two verbs → adverb in the middle
